Did you know?
  • Borough Market was once known as London's Larder. Until the 1930s it had its own police force called ‘The Beadles’ who were able to arrest people and put them in the cells underneath the market.
  • The eye-catching Shard is 309.6 meters high and 95% of construction materials were recycled.
  • Southwark was a huge entertainment zone in London. It had many theatres, taverns, cockpits, gambling houses, and brothels. Due to this Southwark was a very dangerous place after dark, with the dangers of mugging and drunkards everywhere.
  • Thomas Hans Orde-Lee jumped off Tower Bridge sporting a homemade parachute in 1917 to show its effectiveness in low altitudes and how it could be used by the Royal Air Force. This gave a start to the first parachute regiment.
  • There used to be a latin sign above the entrance to the Globe Theatre that said “Totus mundus agit histrionem” meaning “The whole world is a playhouse”. In 1613 the Globe Theatre burnt down after a special effect went wrong on stage.
