London Borough of Bexley

Northumberland Heath was originally in the Parish of St John’s Erith, and it became its own parish in 1905. The location is bordered by Erith, Crayford, Bexleyheath, Barnehurst, Belvedere and Slade Green. With its array of transport links, popular schools and busy high street it has always been a popular location. 

 

Did you know?

  • In 1806 the Lord of the Manor, William Wheatley, allowed the building of a workhouse on estate land on Sussex Road. The 19th Century slang term for a workhouse was a ‘spike’ which led to the whole area being known as ‘Spike Island’

  • The name Northumberland has been used since the 13th Century and is almost certainly derived from the old English word humber meaning ‘river’ or ‘stream’ with Northumberland simply meaning ‘the land north of the stream’

 

Look out for

De Luci-Fish – Designed by Gary Drostle derived from the 11th century arms of the De Luci family. A glass mosaic sculpture standing 80 foot which sits on the main highway roundabout at the entrance to Erith town. 

Erith Pier – London’s Longest pier which hosts the summer ‘Erith pier festival’ with its variety of street foods, beverages and entertainment. 

Erith Rowing Club – Erith rowing club is a former Police premises located on the waterfront, while Erith Yacht club is based in Crayford marshes. 

 

Shopping

Northumberland Heath High Street is stocked with many local shops which include Tesco Express, various food outlets, bookmakers and local businesses. Erith Riverside Shopping Centre is open seven days a week with ample parking facilities. Its offers a wide range of national and local retailers.

The Duchess of Kent – A great local pub best known for their steak nights

Jade Garden – Restaurant and takeaway with a wide variety of Chinese cuisine

Omar Khayyam – Traditional Indian restaurant with all the latest Indian dishes

The Running Horses – A great pub with a traditional atmosphere

The Royal Oak – A comfy pub with a large beer garden, hosting live music on Wednesday afternoons

The Bird and Barrel – Serving beers from Bexley Brewery, this pub has the perfect ambience for drinks and catching up with friends

Red Barn – A pub in a good location with a friendly vibe

 

Properties

Much of the housing stock is Victorian period with some post war council properties and Cottage estate (Vickers style) built for Vickers armaments workers in 1916. Offering anything from one bedroom apartments to detached houses there is great choice in the area. The location is particularly popular with first time buyers due to the new build apartments and shared ownership schemes available.

Erith station to Cannon Street in 40 minutes

Barnehurst Station to London Charing Cross in 43 minutes

Slade Green to London Charing Cross in 57 minutes

Abbey Wood to London Bridge 40 minutes

 

Other Transport

The A2, M25 and Queen Elizabeth II Bridge are all close by. Several bus routes running throughout including a night bus to Trafalgar Square.
