Sevenoaks District, Kent

Swanley town is located in Sevenoaks, Kent and is bordered by Wilmington, Hextable, Hockendon, Eynsford and Farningham. The town centre is currently undergoing modernisation, enabling a lot more businesses to thrive. There are also many plans to build new homes across Swanley along with another train station. Although the area is in Kent, it is heavily associated with South East London due to its close proximity and still being an area which pays London Living Wage.

Did you know?
  • Before 1861, there were only 3 houses in Swanley. After the railway was built housing in the area increased rapidly, and three hospitals were built there to treat sick Londoners who needed to escape the London smog.
  • It is thought that Swanley was originally a Saxon pig farm or a stopover for pig cattle on the way to the markets, earning the name Swine-Ley, (Swine meaning Pig, and Ley meaning Clearing), which later developed into the name Swanley.
