London Borough of Greenwich
Plumstead is located on the eastern edge of the Borough of Greenwich. It is made up of two main areas, Plumstead Common and Plumstead High Street. Plumstead is bordered by Shooters Hill, Charlton, Eltham, Thamesmead, Woolwich, and Abbey Wood. The 1878 Plumstead Common Act protected Plumstead Common as public open space forever. Crossrail is soon coming to Woolwich and Abbey Wood, which is sure to make it a popular area.
Did you know?
- Woolwich Ferry on John Wilson Street dates back to the 14th century and ferries cars across the Thames for free. It exists because the river is too wide at this point for a bridge and is necessary to link the North Circular Road to the South Circular Road.
- The names Plumstead was first found in the Domesday Book in 1086 and originally referred to a place where plums grow.

The Royal Artillery Barracks – Where the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, hosted the pistol and rifle shooting, and the archery
The Thames Path National Trail – This walk starts at the Thames Flood Barrier and continues upstream towards central London
Woolwich Arsenal – It is having a multi-billion pound regeneration which will make way for new homes, businesses, shops, cinema, and offices

Plumstead High Street is stocked with many local shops. Pedestrianised Woolwich town centre is nearby, which hosts a larger array of well known high street stores and a new large Tesco Extra. Charlton High Street and Eltham High Street are also nearby for shops you can’t find in Plumstead.

There is a large amount of Victorian streets in Plumstead mixed with 1930s Houses as well as some ex-local authority. Sought after areas include the Laing Estate, Plumstead Common, Winn Common, and Woolwich Arsenal.

Woolwich Arsenal DLR to Bank DLR in 28 minutes
Woolwich Crossrail to Liverpool Street in 20 minutes
Other Transport
Many Buses serve the SE18 area and N1 as well as the Woolwich Ferry which transports you across the river.
