London Borough of Greenwich

Plumstead is located on the eastern edge of the Borough of Greenwich. It is made up of two main areas, Plumstead Common and Plumstead High Street. Plumstead is bordered by Shooters Hill, Charlton, Eltham, Thamesmead, Woolwich, and Abbey Wood. The 1878 Plumstead Common Act protected Plumstead Common as public open space forever. Crossrail is soon coming to Woolwich and Abbey Wood, which is sure to make it a popular area.

Did you know?
  • Woolwich Ferry on John Wilson Street dates back to the 14th century and ferries cars across the Thames for free. It exists because the river is too wide at this point for a bridge and is necessary to link the North Circular Road to the South Circular Road.
  • The names Plumstead was first found in the Domesday Book in 1086 and originally referred to a place where plums grow.
